An amendment has been submitted to the Land Act stipulating that State issued land granted for residential purposes must be handed over to recipients within a maximum duration of six months after the recipient list is published.

The amendment was submitted by Galolhu South MP Meekail Naseem, from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The amendment also states that any such land plots that have not been issued at the time of the ratification of this amendment must be handed over within three months.

Meekail stated that he has submitted this amendment as the current administration has been delaying the granting of land issued by the former MDP government under its 'Binveriya' housing scheme.

However, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that registries will be issued for all recipients of land plots. He said that in the case of persons who had been granted land from as of yet unreclaimed land, a temporary registry - or a document of guarantee - will be issued confirming that they own the land. This is because a permanent registry can only be issued once the land has been reclaimed and is physically existing.
