Managing Director of Regional Airports Mohamed Rizvi has said on Monday that Hoarafushi Airport will be operational by June 15.

Airport operations were halted in Hoarafushi due to damages incurred during heavy monsoon rains and the subsequent surge waves on May 14. In addition to the airport runway becoming unusable, the terminal and accommodation blocks also sustained structural damages as well.

Rizvi said they were currently working to fix the causeway that connects the airport and Haa Alif Hoarafushi. He predicts this can be completed within the next two days.

Once the repairments -being done by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC)- are completed, Regional Airports will inspect the place before resuming operations.

"Due to the surge waves, the ground of the causeway was damaged. So now we are working to even out the ground. Almost all other work in the airport is now completed," Rizvi said.

Hoarafushi Airport was officially opened less than a year ago, on November 19, 2020, by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. A total of 198 million Rufiyaa was spent on developing the airport.
