The issue of 53 employees facing termination without contract renewal at Haa Alif Dhidhdhoo Fenaka Corporation offices has been submitted to the parliament by MP Abdulla Waheed, who represents the Dhihdhoo constituency.

The letter written to Majlis President, Mohamed Aslam, appealing to be sent to the concerned parliamentary committee, stated that the establishment of a new powerhouse and ice plant by Fenaka Corporation has not yet been completed and that as such, termination of employees cannot be accepted.

“This abrupt termination without any prior notice will stop the work and also cause employees and their families many troubles and losses,” opposition Maldivian Democrat Party (MDP) member, Abdulla Waheed, wrote.

He implored to the Majlis to investigate the matter and appealed the reinstatement of the 53 employees until the project is completed.

The affected employees had protested yesterday due to their termination.

Meanwhile, Fenaka Managing Director, Muaz Mohamed Rasheed said to Mihaaru News that there is currently no pending work at the Dhidhdhoo sites and that therefore a decision was made to not renew the contracts following expiration.

Fenaka had previously hired 2000 individuals to work on special projects during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. In the interview with Mihaaru News, Muaz also clarified that 1800 of these employees were hired to carry out minor projects.

Fenaka was in a critically difficult financial position when the current MD assumed responsibilities.
