National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) has said that when the subsidy reforms are set in place, 70 percent of households will receive subsidies.
NSPA CEO Heena Waleed told Miihaaru News that from next April onwards, the current subsidy system will be transferred to a targeted subsidy system, where households most in need will be the recipients.
Ahead of implementing the change, a study will be done to gauge income and living standards, based on which the subsidies will be provided. Even with the change, she maintains that most households will be eligible to receive subsidies.
"From the population, I would say about 60 to 70 percent households will receive subsidies through this system," she estimates.
Statistics indicate that under the current system, 43 percent of subsidies go to the wealthiest 40 percent of the population.
The poorest 20 percent receive only 17 percent of State subsidies.
Next year's budget has an allocation of MVR 900 million proposed for subsidies.
