MET Office predicts rainy weather throughout the New Year holidays.
In a statement today, the office said that thunderstorms, heavy rain, rough seas and strong winds are expected over a large part of the country, with some islands likely to see swell waves.
These weather conditions are expected to start tomorrow, lasting till the end of Sunday.
They said that this is being caused under the influence of the cyclonic circulation located southeast of Sri Lanka.
In the central and northern atolls, winds are expected to be from north and northeast, while southern atolls will see winds from west and northwest. Winds are expected to be at between 15 to 25 miles per hour, with gusts of up to 50 miles during rain showers.
The MET Office cautions the public to take precautionary measures and for seafarers to check latest weather updates before traveling.
