Criminal Court has decided to accept the statement Sahil Ali gave to Police during the investigative stage despite him having appealed to disregard it.
Sahil, of Finifenmaage, F. Nilandhoo, is accused of murder and abuse of a dead body in the 2023 death of Shiau Mohamed Saeed in a home in capital Male' City. The trial in the case is being held closed to the public.
Criminal Court said that in yesterday's hearing, Sahil had requested the court not to accept the statement he had given to police during investigation. However, the court rejected this request, deciding to accept the statement.
The court also decided to take confidential witness statements from nine witnesses of the prosecution. The preliminary hearings have now ended, with witness statements due to be taken in the next hearing.
Sahil has previously opted to remain silent in court. However, the Court stated that he has no evident disabilities that would make him unable to respond to charges.
The State arranged legal representation for Sahil twice. However, as he refuses to cooperate with assigned lawyers, the Attorney General's Office has decided that the State will no longer provide legal representation for him.
Sahil ultimately stated in court that he will act as his own legal counsel, declining legal assistance. With this, Sahil represented himself in yesterday's hearing as well.
With the case proceeding closed, the Court also has not revealed the exact charges being pressed against Sahil, unlike other cases.
