Former Deputy Commissioner of Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), Asma Shafeeu has been appointed as the Commissioner of the Economic Reform Office, established to improve the government's financial system.
Finance Ministry had announced the opening for the Economic Reform Commissioner post on December 4, with applications closing on December 8.
A media official of the Finance Ministry said that Asma was selected for the role, which involves expediting reforms across various sectors of the government.
Asma served at MIRA for 14 years, including as Deputy Commissioner, with her five-year term concluding on October 31, 2023.
The Economic Reform Commissioner position is a two-year contractual role under the Finance Ministry.
Applicants were required to hold at least a degree in accounting or finance and possess a minimum of 10 years of experience in the field.
Key responsibilities of the role include developing reform strategies, preparing reports on economic, fiscal, and state-owned enterprise (SOE) reforms and formulating frameworks and plans to enhance economic performance.
The 2025 state budget outlines significant measures to reduce government spending, including targeted subsidies and cuts to corporate expenditures, which the Economic Reform Office is expected to oversee.
