Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed today said that the prices of 134 goods would be closely monitored to ensure that there is no shortage of food items.
Adding that it has been some since since the ministry began price control efforts, Economic Ministry, at a press conference held at the President's Office, said that they would visit shops to check market prices and arrange for the delivery of food items if there is a shortage, in order to control food prices.
Minister Saeed said the prices of all commonly used food items will be controlled.
"The government has 134 items, in the basic food category, [as] crucial items. For example, there are essential items among [commonly] used food products," he said.
Saeed stated that if an item runs out or its price increases, STO will take measures to regulate the cost. In such cases, STO will stabilize market prices by introducing the products through its supply.
STO has already decided to launch 24 items during the Ramadan:
1. Basic food: onions, eggs, potatoes, coconuts, dates
2. Vegetables and fruits: garlic, ginger, lime, carrot, orange, cabbage, chilli, guava, watermelon, mango, passionfruit, cucumber
3. Processed food: Nestlé cream, cocoa powder, baked beans, condensed milk
4. Cooking Ingredients: Sun flower oil, Vegetable oil, Basmati rice
