The Malé City Council announced on X that burials in the Hulhumalé cemetery have been suspended due to flooding caused by last week's heavy rains.
The council stated that the water level in the cemetery has risen to 8-9 inches, making it difficult to place coffins. As a result, the cemetery is temporarily unusable for burials.
“Due to this, funerals scheduled to take place today in the Hulhumalé cemetery will now be conducted at the Aa Sahara cemetery mosque in Malé,” the council said.
Flooding in the Hulhumalé cemetery during periods of heavy rain has become a recurring issue. Similar incidents have been reported three times previously, prompting temporary suspensions of burials on each occasion.
To address the problem, the city council decided over a year ago to install a water drainage system in the cemetery. However, the project is yet to begin, and no explanation has been provided for the delay.
