Aa Sahara cemetery, following extensive renovations including a two-storey annex to accommodate funeral attendees and an expanded waiting area, was officially reopened today by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

During the inauguration ceremony, Deputy Mayor of Malé City Council, Mohamed Nareesh, said that the mosque at the cemetery has been renovated, with the first floor expanded and air conditioning installed to better accommodate attendees during funeral services.

Additionally, new washrooms have been constructed, including facilities for people with special needs and a public restroom.

Nareesh addressed previous complaints about the lack of space for women to pray during funerals, stating that a designated, air-conditioned prayer area has been created on the upper floor for women, while those waiting downstairs can also pray in a dedicated area.

As of today, burials will resume at Aa Sahara. Aa Sahara cemetery had been the sole location for funerals in Male' until it was closed last May. Since then, funerals of the deceased in Male' had been held in Hulhumale' Cemetery. As of today, burials will resume at Aa Sahara.

The renovation of the cemetery was carried out in two parts, which includes the structural work and the finishing work, which were handled separately. Initially, the structural work was contracted to PNP Maldives Private Limited for MVR 4.9 million (USD 232,897.97).

However, despite being assigned a one-month timeframe, the project experienced significant delays and remained unfinished. Although the City Council annulled the agreement, the company has retained an advance payment of MVR 3.6 million (USD 232,897.97).

Following this, B-Six Investments was newly hired last December to complete the structure of the building with an investment of MVR 4.6 million (USD 297,591.85).

The finishing work was handed over to another contractor last April, bringing the total cost of the project to MVR 11 million.
