The first meeting of the High Level Core Group between Maldives and India has been held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday.

This is a group in which senior representatives of both countries will be deliberating on implementation of 'A Vision for Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership'.

This vision document was compiled following the meeting between President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the President's Official Visit to India last October.

Yesterday's meeting featured reviewing of bilateral relations between the two countries. Discussions focused on a wide variety of areas, the Foreign Ministry said, including development cooperation, trade and commerce, digital financing, health cooperation, people to people links, defence and maritime security.

The next meeting of the High Level Core Group is scheduled for April and will be held in India.

Although Maldives-India relations were strained at the start of this administration, the two countries have since worked on strengthening relations.

In addition to President Muizzu's official State Visit to India last October, previous Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer also made official visits to the country.

India's Minister of External Affairs Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar visited the Maldives on an official capacity last year as well.

High level discussions have been held during these visits, with India increasing their assistance towards Maldives.
