President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has promised that he will reclaim land in Madaveli and through that provide a permanent solution to the housing problems faced by residents of Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Madaveli.

In his trip to Madaveli, the President met with the Island Council and clarified all their concerns.

In consideration of population, Madaveli is the island where President Dr Muizzu received the highest percentage of votes in last September's presidential election.

Speaking to the residents of Madaveli on Tuesday, the President said that his fundamental purpose of travelling to islands in this manner is to meet with residents and personally hear their concerns and worries.

He stated that this is the same approach he had used when he had served as Mayor of Male' City earlier.

The President assured that he would find a permanent solution to the most pressing issue faced by Madaveli residents at present, which he had identified as being related to housing.

The last time land plots had been issued in Madaveli had been in 2004. Then, a total of only 34 land plots had been allocated. Fifteen years later, the housing issues faced by residents had only become worse.

In relation to this matter, the President stated that to address the lack of housing faced by approximately 300 families in the island, he will initiate a land reclamation project.

"There is a pressing need to increase land mass in this island. We will get technical advise on this matter. We must achieve this through the collaboration of the Council and the Infrastructure Ministry, after analyzing environmental impacts, and in a manner that the residents desire," the President said.

In addition to resolving the housing issues, the President also said that he will arrange for the placement of an ATM on the island, expansion of the harbour, and development of the mosque.

Earlier in his trip, President Dr Muizzu has also assured residents of Faresmathoda that he will reclaim land and resolve housing issues faced in that island.
