President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced yesterday that Maldivian, the national airline, is set to begin operations with wide-body aircraft in early January.
Speaking at a ceremony at the Social Center celebrating the government's first year in office, the President revealed that Maldivian's inaugural wide-body aircraft would be operational by January.
With a seating capacity of 275 passengers, these wide-body aircraft will facilitate direct flights to long-haul destinations, significantly expanding the airline's reach.
As Maldivian's wide-body operations grow, the President noted, the airline will offer flights to destinations in China and Europe over the coming year.
Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen, speaking with Mihaaru News last December, mentioned that Maldivian Airlines aims to add two wide-body aircraft within six months. He further stated that the new fleet additions would support routes to seven new destinations.
The airline is targeting three cities in China, Johannesburg in South Africa, and three cities in Europe.
Previously, Maldivian Airlines flew to China and South Africa using Airbus models. However, these aircraft were unsuitable for direct long-haul flights, necessitating transit stops en route.
Currently, Maldivian operates a fleet of 15 aircraft, which includes one Airbus A320 and two ATR models, with the remainder being Dash aircraft. The Airbus A320 is the only aircraft used for international routes.
Maldivian presently serves 17 domestic destinations as well as routes in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
