India's Renaatus Projects Pvt Ltd has been awarded the contract for the expansion project of Gan International Airport, located in the southernmost Addu City, for a total cost of USD 29.7 million.

Gan International Airport’s Managing Director Gais Naseer and Renaatus Project’s Chairman Selvasundaramwas signed the agreement at a ceremony held at the Meerumaa hotel in Malé on Sunday. The project is funded by a line of credit provided by India's EXIM Bank.

Speaking at the ceremony, Gais said that the airport will be equipped with all the necessary facilities once the expansion is complete. He also said that the project will be linked to all other ongoing developmental initiatives in the city.

Gais also said that the construction of a 130-room hotel and 50 boutique rooms will also be carried out sometime this year at 'Dhoogas' in Gan, which was previously run as a guesthouse. The culmination of these projects will revitalise the economy in the Maldives' south, he added.

Details of the Project

- Passenger terminal with the capacity of serving 1.5 million passengers annually

- Duty-free shops, restaurants, and lounges

- Cold storage and cargo facilities

- Control tower, fire station, roads, and a parking zone

The expansion of Hanimaadhoo International Airport in the Maldives north, which commenced earlier in January, is also being funded by a line of credit provided by the EXIM Bank.

At the ceremony, Indian Ambassador to the Maldives Munu Mahawar said receiving the contract to execute a project in the Maldives south was an honour. He said he recently inspected the progress of Hanimaadhoo International Airport’s expansion and that the project was continuing at a steady pace.

The Gan International Airport’s expansion project is expected to boost tourism and increase economic activity in the region.
