The driver of the sports car involved in a fatal collision with a motorcycle near Central Park in Hulhumale' in the early hours of Friday was found to be driving without a valid driver's license, police said.
Mohamed Visam Siduqee, 26, a resident of Seenu atoll Hithadhoo was arrested in connection with the accident which occurred around 03:00 hrs in front of the Ooredoo head office near Central Park in Hulhumale'.
A police media official told Mihaaru News that Visam did not possess a valid driver's license.
Police have not yet released detailed information about the incident. However, a statement sent to the press yesterday morning said that the accident occurred when the sports car collided with a motorcycle.
Hassan Samah, 23, the motorcyclist involved in the incident sustained fatal head injuries during the collision. He passed away shortly after being taken to Hulhumale' Hospital for treatment.
Samah had ridden with a friend which the accident occurred but was not seriously injured.
Samah, a Prison Lance Corporal at Maldives Correctional Service, had come to Male' to participate in the TFG Marathon, which was held yesterday in Hulhumale'. The accident occurred after he had driven some friends to the marathon venue.
Samah was also preparing for his wedding next month when he passed away, according to close relatives.
Samah joined the Maldives Correctional Service in January 2021 and was serving at Maafushi Prison.
Frequent concerns have been raised about speeding sports cars in Hulhumale' on weekends, posing risks to the public. The area near Central Park has seen previous incidents, including a fatal collision involving a motorcyclist, and a similar crash occurred in Hulhumale' Phase 2 last month.
