The man has been identified as Ali Sajid, 32, who is a fisherman and a social media activist.
Police said today that when taken to Vilin'gili Magistrate Court for his remand hearing, the court had ruled to hold him in custody for seven days.
The victim is a 46 year old woman. She was given treatment at the Gaafu Alif Atoll Hospital and later released.
