President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appealed to the public to grant the ruling party parliament majority so as to facilitate the fulfillment of all the pledges he has made to the people.

Speaking to residents of Gaafu Alif Gemanafushi on Wednesday, President Dr Muizzu asked for the people's cooperation in the numerous development projects he planned to carry out even on that island.

He explained that as the annual state budget for the year is one compiled by the last administration's finance ministry, it did not include many of the projects that this government wishes to undertake.

"The budget that we have been given is not one that we compiled under our direction. It is one that was submitted to the current parliament by the past administration," he said.

He revealed that his administration had only received a duration of ten days to send in proposals for the budget.

"In those ten days, the team we put together, submitted many things, a lot of projects, a very high number was presented. [But] they entirely omitted the funds we proposed for development of Rasmale'," the President offered as an example.

"I have shared with you examples of the last budget process to give you an idea of why it is crucial to have a parliament made up of a majority of members who support the government, who will work alongside the government's policies for the benefit of the people," he said.

"I want to do everything. It is the parliament that can offer cooperation in these efforts. What I am saying is, in these past three months, there are endless examples that I can show you [of why a government-aligned majority is important]."

The President said that if opposition parliamentarians are elected in the upcoming parliamentary elections, the same situation will be seen to be repeated. The President implied that opposition parliamentarians would work to obstruct government's development efforts.

"I have pledged to do many things that the people wish for. I want to be someone who sticks to what he says, and fulfills everything completely. This is why I want this done."

The President explained that in order to fulfill the pledges, the government will need parliament majority to approve budget, draft laws, and bring amendments to laws where needed.
