PNC currently has 68,968 members while opposition MDP currently has currently has 43,755 members.
Elections Commission (EC) statistics reveal that that ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has become largest political party in the Maldives currently.
According to the latest statistics on the Election Commission's website as of December 31, PNC currently has 68,968 members.
PNC, which had 28,201 members at the beginning of last year, has been increasing its membership numbers over the past year.
Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) currently has the second largest number of members. MDP, which was previously the largest party, currently has 43,755 members. But, at the start of last year, the party had 52,142 members.
The third largest party, Jumhooree Party currently has 13,826 members. PPM, which is in the process of dissolution, currently has 12,174 members.
- Adaalath Party: 9,049 members
- MDA: 9,210 members
- MNP, 6,050 members
- The Democrats: 3,667
- MTD: 2,359 members
- PNF: 2,822
In addition, another party in the process of dissolution is MRM which has 1,867 members, Elections Commission said.
While PNC has become the largest party it has been alleged of filling up invalid membership forms. The party also admitted that such forms were submitted and the matter is being investigated by EC and police.
