Ministry of Islamic has cancelled its plans to build a fish pond around the minaret at the Islamic Centre following public backlash.
Following the ministry's announcement of this plan, social media users hit back with concerns about the feasibility of such a project during the economic troubles the country is presently in.
This morning, the ministry has retracted yesterday's announcement seeking small and medium enterprises interested in building the fish pond.
Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said today that the announcement has been cancelled in light of the economic situation.
"This announcement is being cancelled as it is not appropriate to undertake such a project due to how the economy is at present," he said.
Shaheem pointed out that the fish pond has been built around the minaret from early on. He clarified that the ministry's announcement was to seek parties to renovate the existing fish pond.
