Heavy rainfall predicted up north, White Alert issued

MET has predicted thunderstorms across atolls in the northern and southern region of Maldives during the next 24 hours with scattered showers expected in the south.

Maldives Meteorological Services (MET) has predicted heavy rainfall across the northern region and some atolls in central Maldives during the next 24 hours.

According to MET office atolls in the northern and central regions are expected to experience heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, while some islands in the south are expected to have sporadic showers.

MET had also issued two White Alerts today, in the morning and afternoon, for atolls in the northern region.

Statistics from MET indicate that Haa Dhaalu atoll Kulhudhuffushi experienced the most rainfall in the past 24 hours, with 39.8 millimeters recorded. The second highest rainfall was observed in Shaviyani atoll Funadhoo, which received 33.6 millimeters of rain.

MET predicts the southern region to experience gusts from the southeast at 3-13 miles per hour, while other regions can expect gusts from the southwest at the same speed. MET office further predicts that wind gusts may accelerate up to 35 miles per hour during showers.

MET stated that seas are estimated to remain calm during this time, and will be moderately rough during showers.
