MVR 88.9 million received for Green Fund in first three quarters

In the first nine months of this year, MVR 88.91 million has been received as Green Tax from tourists.

In the first nine months of this year, MVR 88.91 million has been received as Green Tax from tourists.

As per the Finance Ministry's Green Fund report from September, MVR 80.7 million of this came from resorts.

In this period, MVR 4.79 million was received as Green Tax from guesthouses, MVR 2.11 million from tourist hotels, and MVR 1.25 million from safaris.

From the total funds received, MVR 57.65 million has been spent on environmental projects, the report shows.

This includes projects related to erosion, waste management and drainage.

The largest amount was spent on resolving erosion in Shaviyani atoll Komandoo. This project cost a total of MVR 38.8 million.

After project expenditure, MVR 31.26 million remains in the Green Fund.

Currently, USD 6 is charged as Green Tax from establishments with over 50 rooms, including resorts, hotels, tourist vessels, hotels and guesthouses on inhabited islands. Establishments with less than 50 rooms are charge USD 3.

From 2025 onwards, the Green Tax will be raised from USD 6 to USD 12, and from USD 3 to USD 6.
