Thinadhoo South MP Abdulla Ahmed again withdrew the motion he submitted to the parliament, to remove Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham from her post.
The original case highlighting five notions was previously removed to be resubmitted with additional points.
It is not yet disclosed why the case, resubmitted on February 2 to the parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions, was withdrawn.
MP Abdulla filed the motion stating that Bisham had failed to carry out the tasks and responsibilities as PG, alleging that due to her incompetence many had been prosecuted and imprisoned unlawfully. He claimed that many of the prosecutions were politically motivated.
According to the parliamentarian, the motion was submitted after discussions with the ruling coalition parties’ parliamentary group.
Moreover, MP Abdulla said, “There was no progress from the Committee on Independent Institutions with regards to the case, so after talks with the committee’s chair and parliament group leaders, the case was withdrawn”.
Previously having served as the Attorney General, Bisham was appointed to the role of Prosecutor General in 2015, after former PG Muhthaz Muhsin was impeached following a vote of no confidence. Bisham was then legal advisor to former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom at the President's Office.
The opposition at the time had alleged that Bisham had played a role in the "politically motivated" imprisonment of opposition leaders during Yameen's regime.
The power to appoint and dismiss Prosecutor Generals is held by the parliament, while the Supreme Court has the final say regarding the matter.
