The motion of no confidence filed against Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham by Thinadhoo South MP Abdulla Ahmed was withdrawn on Tuesday.

Secretary General of the Parliament Aminath Niusha revealed on Friday that the motion was withdrawn on the same day it was submitted by Thinadhoo South MP Abdulla Ahmed, November 20.

According to local media Mihaaru, the parliamentarian stated that the case was withdrawn to add more notions to the motion, adding that the case is set to be filed in the following week.

"This is not over. Will file it again. Bisham can be impeached", asserted MP Abdulla Ahmed.

MP Abdulla filed the motion stating that Bisham had failed to carry out the tasks and responsibilities as PG, alleging in the motion that due to her incompetence many had been prosecuted and imprisoned unlawfully and that many of those prosecutions were politically motivated.

Previously having served as the Attorney General, Bisham was appointed to the role of Prosecutor General in 2015, after former PG Muhthaz Muhsin was impeached following a vote of no confidence. Bisham was then legal advisor to former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom at the President Office.

Prior to Muhthaz, then PG Ahmed Muizzu had resigned due to the parliament's intention to cast a vote of no confidence against him.

The current ruling coalition previously accused Bisham of filing charges against political leaders under politically motivated orders from the former President Yameen.

As per Maldivian law, the power to appoint and remove the PG from office lies within the parliament but the Supreme Court has the final say regarding the matter.
