Former President of Maldives, and founding member of both Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats, Mohamed Nasheed, has said that it would be in the best interest of the country and the parties with MDP and The Democrats joined forces.

“I think the best option for Maldives, MDP and The Democrats at the moment is to form an alliance between MDP and The Democrats,” Nasheed wrote in X.

Nasheed's remarks come amid rumors that some senior The Democrats have rejoined the MDP and the competition for the MDP's presidential ticket has increased.

Despite talks that former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih plans to contest for MDP's primary ticket, he has not yet commented on the matter.

During the previous administration, when Solih was president, Nasheed and Solih had a fall out which saw Nasheed leaving MDP and forming The Democrats in June 2023. At the time Nasheed said he would "dismantle" MDP and was believed to have worked against MDP's success in the presidential election.

The Democrats also contested during the first round of the election, but came out without success. The party also failed to secure seats in the subsequent parliamentary election.

Nasheed, who is currently away from the political scene, is the Secretary General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) and lives in Ghana since moving there a year ago to fulfil the responsibilities of his role at the forum. In January, he said that he did not intend to actively work in either MDP or The Democrats at the time.

However, Nasheed said MDP was like a child to him and that he would always wish for it to remain strong.
