President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced plans to carry out a two year project where Maldives' official National Day activities would take place in HA. Utheemu.
Visiting Utheemu during his ongoing travels to the islands of Haa Alifu atoll, the president said stepping foot on the island brought extraordinary national feelings.
He said that although it is customary to celebrate National Day in Utheemu at least once every presidential term, he is not happy with the tradition. Instead, he would like for it to be a continued national project, Dr. Muizzu said.
"I intend to carry this out as a project. Including this centre, the palace and the historical sites in this island," he said.
With this decision, the President announced that Utheemu would host this year's and next year's official celebrations of the National Day.
HA. Utheemu is the birthplace of three Maldivian heroes who saved the country from Portuguese invasion. The most special place in the island is Utheemu Palace built in the 16th century. It was the residence of Boduthakurufaanu, who led the fight against the Portuguese.
National Day is celebrated on the 1st of Rabiul Awwal to commemorate this great triumph.
