Five Sri Lankan nationals aboard a vessel that illegally entered Maldivian waters have been remanded in custody for 30 days after being found in possession of 468.6 kilograms of drugs valued at approximately MVR 1 billion.

The vessel was seized by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard near Makunudhoo and transported to Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi harbour under the custody of the Police and Coast Guard. A search of the vessel led to the recovery of drugs, marking the largest seizure of drugs in the country in recent times.

The five men on board include a 21 year old, two 22 year olds, a 37 year old, and a 56 year old. Kulhudhuffushi Magistrate's Court ordered the five men to be held in a custodial jail for a period of 30 days.

Police said that preliminary tests show the contents to be 344 kilograms of methamphetamine and 124.6 kilograms of cocaine among the seized drugs and that the street value of these drugs is at around MVR one billion.
