Shaheed, of Baazeege, S. Hithadhoo, took oath of office yesterday, with his letter of appointment presented to him by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at a special ceremony held at the President's Office yesterday.
Shaheed was earlier appointed at a High Court Judge on July 24, 2019. He was then made Chief Judge of High Court on October 26, 2023. He has previously served as Legal Officer at the Criminal Court, a Feydhoo magistrate and a Criminal Court judge.
He holds a Master's degree in Islamic Judicial Science and Shariah Policy and an LLB in Jurisprudence and Law.
Following the resignation of former Supreme Court Judge, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) announced the vacancy twice. In response to this, applications were received from three persons: Shaheed, former Deputy Prosecutor General Mariyam Nihayath and lawyer Rusdhullah Ibrahim.
After interviewing the three candidates, JSC nominated Shaheed as Supreme Court Judge to the President. His name was then forwarded by the President to the Parliament for review.
Parliament voted on Shaheed's appointment yesterday, receiving 64 votes unanimously in favour.
At present, in addition to Shaheed, the Supreme Court bench consists of Chief Justice Ahmed Muhthasim Adnan, Judge Dr Azmiralda Zahir, Judge Aisha Shujune Mohamed, Judge Mahaz Ali Zahir, Judge Ali Rasheed Hussain and Judge Mohamed Ibrahim.
Judges Azmiralda and Mahaz are currently on suspension in relation to disciplinary investigations being carried out against them.
