The 'Olhu Hiyaa' cat shelter has been opened today.

Olhu Hiyaa was inaugurated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

The facility is located in Hulhumale' Phase 2. It was developed by the Male' City Council on a land of 5000 sqft provided by Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on request of the President.

This temporary cat facility is designed to house the stray cats on the streets in Male' region. This is expected to bring down violence against cats, better attend to the spread of feline diseases and provide a safe environment for the cats.

The facility has a quarantine area for cats, a clinic and a laboratory. It also has a pharmacy where veterinary medication will be available.

Also set up at the facility is a recreational area for the resident cats.

President Muizzu, speaking at the ceremony acknowledged rising concerns from the public regarding hygiene due to the increasing stray cat numbers, and said that with the establishment of the facility, residents in Male' region will start to see the difference in a couple of months.

He said that the stray cats will be transferred to the facility, where they will be properly cared for.

The President also called for cooperation and assistance from the cat community to ensure that the work of the facility is successful.

He said that he had tried to steer the formation of a cat facility even when he had served as Mayor of Male' City. However, it had remained unachieved due to lack of support from the administration at the time which was led by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The President further pointed out that this is the first administration to dedicate a ministry for the welfare of animals.

Male' City Council last month announced seeking veterinarians and nurses for the facility as well.
