Parliament has today approved Mohamed Zahid as President of the Elections Commission (EC) and AbduRahman Solah Rasheed as Vice President.
Parliament has today approved Mohamed Zahid as President of the Elections Commission (EC) and AbduRahman Solah Rasheed as Vice President.
Under the recent amendment to the Elections Commission Act, the President and Vice President of the commission is appointed by the President with parliamentary approval.
The President nominated Zahid and Solah and forwarded their names to parliament for approval last week.
In today's vote, both Zahid and Solah were approved unanimously by all MPs who participated in the vote.
Zahid and Solah were appointed as EC members last month.
Zahid has previously served as the Vice President of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives. He was removed from the post after a no-confidence vote in parliament.
Solah worked at EC previously as well. His last position was as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, from which he resigned early last year.
