The "Gan Ekuveri Masveringe Jamiyya" (Gan United Fishermen's Association) has confirmed giving Ramadan allowance for all of the 172 fishermen from the island.
According to the association, each of the fisherman, local to the island will receive MVR3,000 prior to the Islamic sacred month.
The decision was confirmed during the association's general assembly held recently.
The president of the Laamu atoll Gan fishermen's association, Mr. Hussain Haneef had commented that the association's decision of providing Ramadan allowance aims to alleviate financial detriments faced by local fishermen in light of low fishing.
Furthermore, the allowance is not exclusive to fishermen of Gan but also fishermen working in all of the 15 vessels registered to the island.
The "Gan Ekuveri Masveringe Jamiyya" is a local NGO operated through funds allocated by USA's Fair Trade Fund. The Fund had provided a grant of MVR516,000 to the association under the agreement entered by the parties.
