The Democrats President Imthiyaz Fahmy (Inthi) has expressed support for the idea proposed by former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President and founder of The Democrats, Mohamed Nasheed, regarding a potential collaboration between the two parties.

Nasheed, who is currently not active in politics, shared his view on social media yesterday, suggesting that a joint effort between MDP and The Democrats would be in the best interest of both the nation and the two parties. In response, Imthiyaz took to X to welcome and support Nasheed's suggestion.

During the previous administration, when Solih was president, Nasheed and Solih had a fall out which saw Nasheed leaving MDP and forming The Democrats in June 2023. At the time Nasheed said he would "dismantle" MDP and was believed to have worked against MDP's success in the presidential election.

The Democrats also contested during the first round of the election, but came out without success. The party also failed to secure seats in the subsequent parliamentary election.

Nasheed, who is currently away from the political scene, is the Secretary General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) and lives in Ghana since moving there a year ago to fulfil the responsibilities of his role at the forum. In January, he said that he did not intend to actively work in either MDP or The Democrats at the time.

However, Nasheed said MDP was like a child to him and that he would always wish for it to remain strong.
