Minister of State for Defence Muaz Haleem has been appointed as the Secretary General (SG) of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC).
Previously the role was filled by Zeenaaz Adnan, whose term ended on December 31. Zeenaaz is the wife of Local Governance Minister Adam Shareef.
According to a senior PNC official, Muaz was appointed today following a vacancy of 13 days for the position.
The appointment comes amidst allegations that membership forms of individuals from other parties were falsely submitted to the Elections Commission (EC) to strengthen PNC membership.
PNC has yet to comment on these allegations.
One of the cases of party change involves opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP Hussain Ziyad (Fittey), whose membership form was reportedly submitted to the EC on behalf of PNC, according to the commission.
