The man who was arrested for snatching the necklace of another motorist while driving down Alikilegefaanu Magu has been placed in remand in custody for a period of 15 days.
While he confessed to the crime, he claims that he no longer has the necklace.
The man arrested in this case is Hassan Isaam, 30 of Fiyabari, ViliMale'.
On his arrest, he had initially been placed in custody for seven days. At the time of that remand hearing, he had been accused of being in possession of a sharp weapon.
The court order said that this was because a two inch knife was found on him when he was searched by Police on allegations of mugging.
The Criminal Court order says that although he was presented to court on December 20 on charges of mugging, no evidence was submitted to show when or how the incident occurred, or why he was being charged.
With his remand nearing an end, Police presented him in court to extend his detention yesterday, where Police submitted a statement and a snapshot from CCTV footage as evidence.
Isaam admitted in court yesterday that he had snatched a gold necklace that the female motorist had been wearing. However, he said that he is not in possession of that necklace and said he would pay compensation.
Isaam has an extensive record of previous offences.
Videos circulating on social media show a necklace being snatched off a motorist, with the assailant then getting off his own motorcycle and appearing to attempt to grab her handbag as well. The woman drops her motorcycle and backs away as the assailant tries to grab at her. With a crowd gathering, the assailant flees the scene on his motorcycle.
The assailant had been wearing a helmet to conceal his identity during the attack.
