Sheikh Adam Nishan, who frequents the mosque for prayers, said in a post of Facebook today that the mushafs had been thrown around on the floor, and the electrical outlets and adapters at the Imam's minbar had also been damaged.
Taps in the ablution area had also been broken off, with other objects in the mosque facing similar damage.
Nishan said that the matter had been reported to the police, following which forensic officers had attended the scene.
A Police Media Official confirmed that they had received reports of vandalism at Furugan Mosque this morning, stating that they have commenced investigations.
Nishan, meanwhile, accuses that the damage has been caused by a youth who habitually sleeps at the mosque, even during prayer times, who he described as not being mentally stable.
He questioned the point of Male' City Council observing the place 24/7 with CCTV cameras when the mosque ends up being damaged in this manner.
He claims that similar damage has been caused on several instances as well, with reports having been lodged with the police to no avail.
