Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works has announced that islands across Maldives will be lighted up on Saturday night to celebrate Eid al-Fitr.
A total of 65 islands will take part in this year’s event, the ministry said. The main lighting ceremony will be held at Central Park in Hulhumale' and will be attended by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
The tradition of lighting up Male' for Eid began when President Muizzu was the city’s mayor.
While lights have already been installed in some areas of the capital, work is still ongoing. The ministry will begin distributing lights to the islands from tomorrow.
According to the ministry, 36 islands that did not receive Eid lights last year have been included in this year’s project. Minister Adam Shareef previously stated that the initiative would cost MVR 28 million.
Last year, cities and atoll capitals were decorated with arches and colorful lights as part of the Eid celebrations.
