Government has contracted a company from Latvia as the new vendor for face recognition in eFaas - the online portal for government offices.

In a statement issued yesterday, NCIT said that they had dismissed the earlier contractor Sum and Substance Pvt Ltd (SumSub), and the work has been handed over to a new vendor. With this, facial recognition option is once again available on the portal.

SumSub is a company registered in the United Kingdom, formed by Israelis. With public criticism against contracting an Israeli company, the government has voided that agreement.

At the time, NCIT said that SumSub had been contracted as they were operated under UK laws. They assured that the company would not have access to any information regarding Maldivians besides photos used for facial recognition.

NICT's statement said that the new vendor is Regular Forensics, registered in Latvia. They said that an application of this company is now used for face recognition.

The statement further states that this will be conducted within NCIT without any foreign parties having access to photos or other personal information of any citizen.

NCIT states that Regular Forensics has 30 years of experience in the field. The company is trustworthy, highly competent in digital services and provides service to many international companies and countries, NCIT said.

At present, facial recognition services are only available when using a web browser to log into eFaas portal.
