Over MVR 27 million has been lost in scam cases since late last year, of which only around MVR 1 million has been recovered, police said today.

Ahmed Nafiz, Head of Crime Investigation revealed these statistics at a press conference yesterday. The police records indicate that more than MVR 57 million has been lost in connection with various scams in total, involving 28,000 cases.

"Out of the MVR 27 million mentioned earlier, we have been able to recover around a million rufiyaa so far," he stated.

Nafiz mentioned that the scam cases were meticulously planned, making it challenging to recover the lost funds.

He emphasized the difficulty in unraveling such cases, stating, "That's why it's not that easy to get to the bottom of it. So, the number of recoveries is coming down."

The police identified various methods used by scammers, including fraudulent claims of flats and land, sending deceptive links, false promotion messages, social media account hacking, reloading scams, and deceiving individuals under the guise of property sales and prostitution.

Police reported that scams are currently most widespread under the guise of selling dollars and through advertisements claiming the sale of goods.

The authorities are also investigating a case involving fraudulent withdrawals from a fund supposedly established to aid Palestinians.

“We have started the process of setting up a scam center to deal with the scams. The work on the center will begin in March,” Police stated.
