Under the latest amendment to the Elections Commission Act, the President now holds the authority to appoint the EC’s leadership.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated Mohamed Zahid as the President of the Elections Commission (EC) and Abdul Rahman Solah as its Vice President, with their names submitted to Parliament for approval.
Under the latest amendment to the Elections Commission Act, the President now holds the authority to appoint the EC’s leadership.
Parliament reviewed the nominations today after receiving a letter from President Muizzu seeking approval for Zahid and Solah’s appointments.
Both Zahid and Solah were appointed as EC members in January. Zahid previously served as Vice President of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) but was removed from the position after Parliament passed a no-confidence motion against him.
Solah, before joining the EC, was the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology. He resigned from the post last year.
