The 24 individuals have been stuck in Saudi Arabia since December.
A group of people who went to perform Umrah from Maldives with pilgrimage tour group Al Hijra have been left stranded in Saudi Arabia after the company failed to make travel arrangements for the pilgrims to travel back home.
It has been confirmed that 24 individuals who went with Al Hijra are stuck in Saudi Arabia since last December. According to local reports, their return flights have still not been confirmed.
A family member of one of the pilgrims told Mihaaru that they were originally scheduled to return on Tuesday, but that tickets have not been arranged for the pilgrims yet.
“We don't even know how things are being arranged now,” the family member said.
According to Mihaaru ticket and visa issues were also encountered when they left for Umrah on behalf of Al Hijra. Because of this, the group's departure was also on different flights over the court of multiple days.
Al Hijra said in a Facebook post that the company is facing financial difficulties in bringing the pilgrims back home..
"The company is still working to bring Umrah pilgrims to Maldives. However, no progress has been made so far," Al Hijra said.
Regarding the matter, Islamic Minister, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said it the issue has come to the attention of the ministry and assured that the ministry will do everything possible to bring them back to home.
"Through the Maldives Hajj Corporation, which is currently in Mecca, we are working to help the distressed pilgrims. I have instructed the MD of the Hajj Corporation," Shaheem said.
"We will not stand by without helping any Maldivians in their difficulties. The President always advises us to work closely with the people. To solve the problems that arise."
