Faris Maumoon has made the decision to once again run for the parliamentary seat representing Machangolhi North constituency.
In a social media post on X, he stressed the pivotal role of the parliament in driving the country's reform process and solicited the support of the constituents in Machangolhi North as he prepares to vie in the upcoming parliamentary elections next year.
His campaign slogan for this election is 'vaahaka dhakkaane/dhekkeyne,' which translates to 'will talk and can talk.'
The son of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Faris previously contested as an independent candidate in the presidential election last month, securing the second-to-last position with 3,190 votes among eight candidates.
However, in the previous parliamentary elections in 2019, he ran independently in the Machangolhi North constituency and finished second.
He received 600 votes and lost the seat with a 226-vote margin, to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate, Mohamed Rasheed (Bodhigu). Jamila Ali Khalid, the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidate who ran against Faris, received 220 votes.
The upcoming parliamentary elections, scheduled for the first four months of the following year, will see the election of 93 constituencies. Several candidates have already declared their intentions to contest these elections.
