KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants first opened in Male' in 2018. After that, outlets of both franchises were also opened in Hulhumale'.
When KFC and Pizza Hut in Male' were closing, there had been efforts to sell some of their equipment.
As part of a worldwide campaign boycotting businesses with ties to Israel in protest of Israel's genocide in Palestine's Gaza, KFC and Pizza Hut were also boycotted. However, KFC has stated that they do not support Israel and that they are a business unrelated to political matters.
The campaign was also carried out in the Maldives, with protests held in front of these establishments. There was also vandalism with the glass panes of these outlets in Male' being broken.
In Muslim-majority countries, Indonesia and Malaysia, KFC businesses suffered significant losses due to this boycott campaign. According to media reports, KFC's Indonesian outlets suffered losses of USD 35 million in the first quarter of last year. It is reported that 47 KFC outlets have been closed in that country since last year.
