The two, arrested on December 9 under a special operation conducted in Fuvahmulah, are Ahmed Niushad, 34, of Karankaa Villa, Dhoodigan, Fuvahmulah and Hassan Azim, 29, of Zamaanee Villa, Dhoodigan, Fuvahmulah.
Although a number of other individuals were also arrested, these two are accused of leading the drug trafficking and money laundering network. In the case, Fuvahmulah Magistrate Court placed them in remand in custody until the end of trial. The order was then appealed at the High Court, which ruled that placing them in remand in custody after stating there is some evidence to support the charges is against Article 60 of the Criminal Procedures Act. With this, the High Court released both.
Police once against arrested them yesterday with an order from the Fuvahmulah Magistrate Court. As the two are currently in capital Male' City, the order was implemented in Male'. When taken to Criminal Court for their remand hearing, the court placed Azim in custody for 7 days and Niushad for 10 days.
The Criminal Court order said that although the High Court had overturned the previous ruling, there is no objection to implementing a new court order.
The court order says MVR 5 million was rolled through Azim's bank account. It said that Police have stated there is no indication that he is in any kind of full-time employment and the amounts deposited to his account are higher than that which would be received as salaries, and he has provided money to other persons as well.
Niushad's account, meanwhile, has seen MVR 21 million rolled through it over a period of five years, and he, too, is not known to hold permanent employment, the court order cites Police as saying.
Under the special operation 'Operation Veshi Rakkal' commenced in Fuvahmulah on January 14 last year, 58 persons were arrested with 75 cases against them being investigated. Of these, 65 cases were forwarded to the PG Office for prosecution.
