Supreme Court, on Sunday, suspended the sentences of former Minister of Defence and National Security, Mohamed Nazim and former deputy speaker and Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim.

The court had ordered stay on enforcing sentences of former defence minister Nazim and former MP Nazim until a judgement was reached on the review of their conviction.

Both the former MP and former defence minister had earlier requested the top court to review their conviction.

Whilst the court has suspended their sentences, former MP Nazim and former defence minister Nazim are currently abroad.

Former defence minister Nazim was sentenced for 11 years by the Criminal Court on March 26, 2015, over illegal weapon possession, after a pistol and three bullets were found in his residence. However, had earlier appealed his conviction at the High Court and Supreme Court and lost both appeals.

Former MP Nazim was sentenced to 25 years in jail on corruption charges, over defrauding the state of MVR 1.4 million (US $91,400) by submitting bids on behalf of non-existent companies.
