Chairperson of the National Drug Agency (NDA), Lubna Zahir, has revealed plans to train addiction counselors to support individuals affected by drug addiction across the Maldives.

Following discussions with the Health Ministry and Allied Insurance, Lubna emphasized the aim to establish trained counselors in every inhabited island. These counselors will assist in addressing the widespread drug addiction issues within the community.

While the training program will predominantly be conducted online, certain sessions will require in-person attendance. However, Lubna did not specify a timeline for the program's commencement.

“We are committed to placing addiction counselors in every island of the Maldives, God willing,” stated Lubna, who also serves as the state minister of the Home Ministry.

Lubna also acknowledged that the National Institute for Research and Addictions Studies has been dormant for the past 12 years. She noted that efforts are underway to expand its operations by conducting vital research on the current state of drug use in the Maldives. These studies will utilize the data already available at the NDA.

NDA's acting CEO, Mohamed Rashid, explained that the agency is exploring methods to reintegrate drug-affected individuals by keeping them within their communities.

"In recognizing the gaps in resources, we have sought collaboration with the Health Ministry and Allied Insurance," Rashid noted.

The discussions also touched on the provision of outpatient services for drug users through existing health facilities. Rashid further stated that legal measures will be taken against individuals who refuse to comply with treatment protocols.

Research indicates that approximately 7,500 individuals use drugs in the Maldives. Lubna has previously highlighted that drug use is prevalent in every inhabited island, with a high rate of relapse among those undergoing treatment.

The NDA's ongoing efforts aim to tackle these challenges by developing robust counseling and treatment frameworks across the nation.
