The 'Kooddoo Cold Storage Expansion Project' which aims to increase the capacity of cold storage to 4000 tonnes has been handed over to Lucky Global Projects.
The agreement covers establishment of a 4000 tonne cold storage facility and power system in Gaafu Alif atoll Kooddoo within a period of one year.
The agreement was signed in a ceremony held at the President's Office today.
At present, Kooddoo has a cold storage capacity of 2000 tonnes.
This is a MVR 6.6 million project run under aid from Saudi Fund for Development.
At present, cold storage facilities across the country has a total capacity of 8,500 tonnes. The government aims to increase capacity to 25,000 tonnes by the end of this presidential term.
In the ceremony held today, the government also allocated funds for private parties to set up a system for cold storage of fish with saltwater on fishing vessels. These grants were awarded to those who applied for it.
Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources said that the establishment of this system would reduce the need for long trips to procure ice, and bring down fuel costs. At present, the system is set up on 74 fishing vessels.
The project would see the system set up on between 100 to 115 fishing vessels.
