Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has departed for Singapore to undergo medical treatment.

According to his party, the Maldives Thirdway Democrats (MTD), Adeeb arrived in Singapore yesterday evening for medical treatment. The party stated that Adeeb is receiving treatment for a life-threatening vascular disease, following advice from multiple doctors.

Under the supervision of the Maldives Correctional Services and with police security, Adeeb departed for Singapore. He has been granted permission to leave the country for a period of 10 days for his medical treatment.

Adeeb was granted permission by the correctional service to leave for medical treatment, following his recent admittance at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). After the emergency treatment, Adeeb applied for permission to go abroad for further medical treatment.

According to MTD, Adeeb had initially received treatment for a life-threatening nerve disease while he was imprisoned in 2015. In 2020, he was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison with a fine of MVR 2 million for his involvement in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal. However, due to his health condition, Adeeb was transferred from jail to house arrest after his conviction, and he has subsequently sought commutation of his jail sentence through parole. However, he has not yet been granted the opportunity for parole.
