Maldivian airline has said that they have made many hires in anticipation of the arrival of the new wide body aircraft that they have acquired.

A Maldivian media official said that all preparations have now been completed to bring the new Airbus A-330 to Maldives on Monday and commence flights.

The aircraft has a capacity of carrying 264 passengers, with Maldivian having hired 21 additional staff for its operations.

The new hires include an A-330 captain trainee, two captains of that rating, two first officers, 14 cabin crew and two engineers. The cabin crews include six who speak Chinese.

In the ceremony held in November to mark one year in office, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced that with this new aircraft, Maldivian will broaden the destinations it flies to, including ones in China and Europe.

Minister of Transport Mohamed Ameen said last December that with these new boats, seven new destinations will be added. He said then that this would include three cities in China, Johannesburg in South Africa and three cities in Europe.

Maldivian currently has a fleet of 24 planes. These include one A320 plane, 4 ATRs, 7 Dash planes and 11 Dash Twin Otter planes. The A320 is used for international flights.
