National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has provided water drainage pumps to 72 islands across the Maldives in preparation for severe weather conditions in the next coming days.

Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has forecasted heavy rainfall and adverse weather for the next six days. In response, police, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), and NDMA have launched a joint operation to mitigate potential damage caused by heavy rainfall.

In a press briefing on the operation, NDMA CEO Hisan Hassan said that the agency had provided necessary equipment to flood-prone islands to help mitigate damages during severe weather.

"NDMA has provided water drainage pumps and other facilities to 72 islands that typically experience flooding under such conditions. Additionally, a fixed-base irrigation system will be installed on these islands," Hisan said.

Hisan added that community emergency response teams are usually the first responders during flood events. If the situation exceeds their capacity, additional support is provided by police, MNDF, and other relevant agencies.

NDMA has also issued warnings advising residents to take necessary precautions as the weather is expected to worsen from today.

Earlier this month, heavy rains caused significant flooding in Male' City and other islands, resulting in substantial property damage.
