Six persons contracted AIDS in three years

Health Protection Agency has said that six additional persons have contracted AIDS in the Maldives within the past three years.

Health Protection Agency has said that six additional persons have contracted AIDS in the Maldives within the past three years.

Information shared by the agency with Mihaaru show that 2 men contracted AIDS in 2021, 1 person in 2022, and 2 men and a woman last year.

HPA said that 43 persons have contracted AIDS in the Maldives so far, with 16 having since passed away. Currently, 26 persons are living with AIDS.

In recent years, the highest number of cases were reported in 2019, with 5 men and 2 women recorded as contracting AIDS.

Most AIDS patients in Maldives are between the ages of 15 to 24, with 10 in this age category. There are 6 other individuals between the ages of 25 to 34.

Health Ministry's advice on prevention of AIDS

- Chances of contracting HIV are lessened through ensuring sexual partners are negative for HIV

- Avoid reusing needles and syringes

- Test early for HIV during pregnancy and if positive, take recommended treatment to avoid passing HIV to infants
