Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb was the only candidate who applied to contest in The Democrats' primary election.

The Democrats, a political party formed by former President Mohamed Nasheed's supporters in the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), opened its primary election on Thursday.

While the deadline for the application was at 4 PM on Saturday, Ilyas had submitted his application for candidacy three hours prior to the deadline.

According to the party's constitution, if only one member applies for the presidential primary election, a vote must be conducted to determine whether the members approve of the candidate. The candidate needs to receive at least 10 percent of the votes in affirmation to confirm their candidacy.

With former President and current Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed stating that he has no interest in running for The Democrats' primary this year, it seems highly unlikely that his name will appear on the ballot for the party's presidential candidacy.

The Elections Commission (EC) has officially begun accepting nomination application for the presidential candidacy this year. The applications will be accepted between Sunday, July 23 to Monday, August 7.
